Hipsterism
Stop the Takeover!

Thanks to stores like Urban Outfitters and H&M, hipsters are now being cloned by the minute. Polkadots, flat pointy shoes, headbands, bright colors, and a whole slew of 80s accessories have painted the city with the ugliest shade of unoriginality. The hipsters are everywhere and there's no stopping them.

For starters, what is up with those T-shirts with images of Ak 47s and Uzis! WTF?! I'm sorry, but are shirts with images of guns supposed to be ironically cool? And why so much color and patterns! Why?! And what is the obsession with the "era comebacks". It was the 80s and now it's the 40s and 50s. How about we stick to the present and cut out the nostalgic crap that is so played out.

I guess to each their own. But seriously people, whatever happened to originality? Style? And why is the "cool" of now, so damn uncool!

I tell you, if I see another yellow leather bag or a purple and grey striped, off-the-shoulder top, or a turqoise pair of leg warmers over a pair of white low-healed, pointy 80s boots, I'm going to hurl. No wonder I've gone back to wearing black again.

Yes, the hipsters are out and they are definitely about. They have pretty much infiltrated every damn scene there is. I feel like there's some kind of takeover going on here.

A friend recently pointed out that maybe we're all hipsters deep down - like the "hipster within" kind of thing. I don't know about you, but to me, that's a very scary thought. And just to make sure all is ok on my end, I'm about to go check my closet and burn anything that's brightly coloured or has polkadots.

Glad I read this...I'm especially disturbed by the resurgence of the 80's fashion. That shit didn't look good on me then and I wouldn't be caught dead in it now.
If you want a real thrill - go shopping for clothes when you are 5 months pregnant. If one more person tells me that black in "slimming" in my current state or all I need to do is "wear a cape and some tights/skinny jeans - it's REALLY IN this year." Someone's gonna get slapped by this pregnant chick.
Thanks for your writing, I always enjoy your blog.

yes, but when something is annoying whadya you gonna do...blog about it, right? the truth is, i actually own a hot red polkadot top and I have lots of color in my closet...so truth be told...i can't hate on the hipsters....i guess what annoys me isn't so much the color schemes or whatever, it's the whole pretentious trendy crap that is part of the whole Hipsternation...hipsterism is a culture, an attitude, a way of being and i just focused on the aesthetic of it!

ps. Krista, go on with your bad pregnant self girl! nothing is hotter than a pregnant woman! for real!

Hear, hear PQ.

And this Audrey Hepburn imagery for the Gap? Just to say you can never be too European, too rich, too skinny, too straight-haired, too ingenue or too dead (??...nor too well-respected) to be trendy. Nothing like America's favourite ingenue from Hollywood's golden years to remind you that a "perfect", indie-girl-next-door kind of world is what right-wing, big business wants... that's some arch shit from the high Reagan years but with a super-consumer, globalization twist.

And yes people, Krista looks amazing.

p.s. my word verification is "hipszl", hip shizzle totally.

I just bought a polk a dot blouse and I love it. It is sheer and it is office looking, and I wear a black tank top at the bottom. I will wear that thing out expire it 7 years from now, from washing.

But I hate bright bags. And I've always loved hankershief (s) around my neck really since I was 16 years old--10 years later and I still have them and ocassionally wear em around my neck and sometimes to hold a pony tail.

Nevertheless I hear you. I'll look outdated and seem like I'm following the trend, when in reality I've always had the style and gotten the weird looks. Hankerchiefs rock...my mom's blouses I've had...and til this day wear and will continue to.

But I hear you PQ loud and clar. And you Kalimba too.

Too this, too that, and I am wary of falling into that, but here I am loving my bandannas!

ahhh the ironic rap wear...shoot, that mos definitely hits a nerve...that is so brutal, what is up with the ironic rap stuff??? ugh! i say, enough!
and those damn fanny packs...

fab, yes, i just bought a red polkadot top too...but the point is you and I are not hipsters...so we will most likely continue to wear those tops (as you said) for the next 7 years or until the thing falls apart!

and anyone who knows me ,knows how I rock the middle eastern aesthetic with scarves and hear wraps and jewelery, etc...but again, the point is I'm just doing my thing...at least i think i am..because but truth be told, there's no escaping the trend..it will get you one way or the other...at the end of it, for the most part (and not for everyone, of course) there's always a certain aesthetic we're trying to give off...i think, whether consciously or not..

and Kalimba, could you you be any more witty with all those new words you come up with...i am SO using "hipszl"! fo shizzle.

one of the worst parts about hipster culture is that they are their own worst critics. all hipsters hate hipster culture. if you're a hipster who is actually into being a hipster, then you're just a wannabe hipster. gah, way too confusing. they're too uncool even for themselves!

HAHAHAHA! been that is too (confusingly) funny...that is SO true...hipsters hate hipster culture...they would be caught dead refering to themselves as hipsters...and yet...hmmm...a wannabe hipster....yikes...i never thought of that...the hipsters who are into being hipsters...ugh...yes, yes, perhaps the former are somewhat more tolerable?
