Asalaamu alaikum.
Don't even get me started on the "finding an accurate map" thing. Not only is Palestine not on maps, but neither is Tibet - it's just sucked up into China.

I know! it's is so friggin screwed up. I spent forever trying to find any map of the middle east (or even the world for that matter) that said palestine - I thought at least an alternative website or something...but nope. I managed to find one that said "West Bank" and another that said "Gaza"!!!!!
anyway,
when i do start teaching high school one day, i'm making damn sure kids know their geography.
pq, an arab friend of mine has a map that has palestine clearly labled as "palestine" on it--but she got it when she was in egypt last year!!! she's an artist, so she decorated it and framed it and has it hanging in her living room.
there's a really great class at u of m taught by a maori man where they examine the colonial legacy of maps...i mean, the very first question he asked that got that class all freaked out (me included) was why is the world always presented as the western hemisphere as UP--that is, the "top' of the world is canada, the u.s., europe and russia, and the "bottom" is all the "third world" countries...
anyway, it was a great class
Wow that class sounds interesting. It's SO true the way the world is presented...the politics and aesthetics of maps...
ya, i'm sure I could find a map of the middle east with palestine in certain other countries! just not in u.s and canada most likely!
altho - where I used to live a few years ago...there was a corner store that sold mini globes and we were trippin because they actually said "palestine" on it...we were so stupid we should have bought them!!!!
